Halloween Puppet Crafts for a Story Circle

Start a Halloween puppet story circle with a small cast of talking puppets, finger puppets or standing fairy dolls. Finish assembly first, then let each character introduce itself and pass the story to the next child.

Use talking puppets for dialogue

The talking-puppet set has ten characters, including a cat, ghost, bat, owl, pumpkin and monsters. Twenty-one pages provide picture instructions and colour and black-and-white versions in A4 and US Letter.

Each puppet has a finger strap and a thumb strap. Fold the middle and lip lines as shown, then attach the straps to the back. Fingers go in the top strap and the thumb in the lower one to open and close the mouth.

Gather the listed paper or cardstock, scissors and glue stick, plus colouring tools if needed. Demonstrate the fold with a sample before asking children to join the straps.

Use finger puppets for several characters

The Halloween finger-puppet download has twenty-four designs across four coloured and four black-and-white pages, with A4 and US Letter versions.

Each character's long paper band wraps around a finger and is joined with glue or tape. The listing notes that scissors and glue may need adult assistance or supervision.

These characters move with the finger rather than through the talking puppet's folded mouth. A child can use one or more to introduce visitors to the story, without needing a large tabletop stage.

Use fairy dolls as a standing scene

The Halloween fairy set has ten one-piece designs in both colour and black-and-white. Each skirt curves into a cone, and its flap joins behind the doll so the finished figure stands upright.

The listing recommends adult supervision with scissors and glue. It provides twenty craft pages per paper size in A4 and US Letter, with paper or cardstock and colouring tools among the named supplies.

These are standing dolls rather than finger puppets. Place them in the middle of the circle or on a nearby display surface.

Give the group a shared beginning

Try this suggested story sequence:

  1. Let each maker introduce a character.
  2. Choose a place where the characters meet.
  3. Give one character a question to ask.
  4. Invite the next person to answer or add an event.
  5. Agree on an ending together.

Keep the three formats in separate making trays if you offer a choice. Allow glued parts to dry before performing.

How do the Halloween fairy dolls stand?
