Printable Colour Sorting Activities for Preschool

Set up a preschool colour-sorting table with object jars, kitten-and-bed pairs or Thanksgiving colour jars. Demonstrate one match, begin with a small selection and add choices as the child understands the task.

Choose jars for sorting varied objects

The Color Sorting Jars Busy Book has seventeen pages: eleven colour jar pages and six cutout sheets with sixty-six picture pieces. A4 and US Letter PDFs are listed.

Children match objects to the correct coloured jars. Its directions include printing, cutting and optional lamination or hook-and-loop dots for reusable play.

As a suggested starting arrangement, place a few clearly different jar colours in front of the child and offer matching pieces. Show one example, then let the child make a choice. This limits table clutter without changing what is included in the download.

Choose kittens for paired matching

The kitten-and-bed activity uses nine colours. Four pages provide kittens, beds, instructions and a colour-learning page.

Children pair each kitten with a bed of the same colour. This is a one-to-one matching setup rather than sorting many different objects into broad colour groups.

Keep the kitten and bed pieces in different shallow trays during setup so the action is clear. You can invite the child to name the colours, as the listing suggests, without turning the task into a test they must finish at a particular speed.

Choose the fall set for a seasonal table

The Thanksgiving sorting download has ten colour jar pages and five cutout sheets with fifty-five themed pieces. Its fifteen pages are supplied in A4 and US Letter PDFs.

The pictured objects include fall foods, clothing and animals. The matching action remains sorting by colour, even when a pumpkin or fox appears on a piece.

Keep this set separate from the general jars if you want children to return every piece to its original container. Similar-looking formats do not mean the downloads are one combined pack.

Plan cutting and the reset

Use this preparation checklist:

  1. Print the pages you intend to use.
  2. Plan adult cutting preparation or help.
  3. Choose whether you need the optional reusable setup.
  4. Group each set's pieces in one labelled container.
  5. Show where pieces go when the session ends.

Paper, printing and any lamination materials are preparations you supply. The listings note that printed colours can vary with the printer, paper and screen, so check your printout before presenting the activity.
